Rapid Response: Cash for Work in Haiti
Haiti, a nation located in a region prone to natural disasters, grapples with substantial vulnerability. The majority of its population is exposed to a range of natural hazards, including earthquakes, hurricanes, and flooding. Hurricane Matthew, which struck the country in early October 2016 with wind speeds of up to 230 km/h, caused widespread devastation.

Deployment of Rapid Response Team
Switzerland was among the first humanitarian actors to reach the affected areas in the Sud department, allowing the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit to prioritise assistance in the most severely impacted communal sections, including Port Salut, Côteaux, Port-à-Piment, Chardonnières, Tiburon, Roche à Bateau, and les Anglais.
Cash for Work Initiative
One of the interventions in SHA's response was the Cash for Work initiative. During the critical post-hurricane phase in October, 2000 households received cash as income support. This financial aid was provided in exchange for their essential contributions to debris removal and road clearance within their own communities.
Empowerment Through Income Support
The Cash for Work Initiative provided direct support to families affected by the hurricane, enabling them to earn income while actively participating in the recovery process. This approach not only helped individuals and households but also bolstered community-wide resilience.
Complementary Efforts
While Cash for Work took center stage in addressing immediate income support needs, SHA's response also encompassed complementary support to meet the most urgent needs of the affected population. Water & Sanitation: Providing potable water, repairing water network, and water purification benefited 35,600 individuals. Shelter: Distributing emergency kits (tarpaulins and ropes) and hard kits (zinc sheets and tools) supported 11,800 people.
