Switzerland and Vietnam strengthen ties in trade, investment and innovation
Berne, 17.10.2026 — During his official visit to Hanoi on Saturday, 17 October, President Guy Parmelin was welcomed by President Tô Lâm and Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng. The discussions focused particularly on bilateral relations between Switzerland and Vietnam, with agreements reached in several policy areas. On Sunday, 18 October, the free trade agreement between the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states and Vietnam will also be signed.
Switzerland and Vietnam have maintained diplomatic relations for 55 years, which were formalised in 2026 through a comprehensive partnership. Since 2008, Vietnam has been a priority country for Switzerland’s economic cooperation programme. The current programme (2025–28) promotes sustainable trade and innovation, a stable financial sector, and climate-focused industrial and urban development.
Both sides emphasised the opportunities offered by the free trade agreement, noting that signing it is an important political gesture that reaffirms their shared commitment to open, rules-based trade. At the same time, both sides stressed their mutual interest in concluding negotiations on a modernised investment protection agreement, aimed at strengthening legal certainty for investments. The challenging international situation and the commitment of both countries as members of the UN Human Rights Council were also on the agenda. The ongoing negotiations on cooperation between the two countries in tackling climate change under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement were also discussed.
During the visit, several bilateral arrangements were signed between Switzerland and Vietnam, including the launch of two economic development cooperation projects. These projects will support the implementation of the free trade agreement and promote sustainable urban development, thereby improving the framework conditions for trade and investment and strengthening long-term competitiveness. In addition, letters of intent were signed regarding closer cooperation on labour and employment issues, as well as on innovation.
Following the talks with President Tô Lâm and Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, meetings are scheduled with President of the National Assembly Trần Thanh Mẫn, and other members of the government. On Sunday, 18 October, the programme will include not only the signing of the free trade agreement between the four EFTA countries and Vietnam, but also the opening of a Swiss–Vietnamese economic forum. Mr Parmelin will be accompanied on the trip by a Swiss business delegation.
